What an SSL certificate does

An SSL certificate (technically TLS) does two jobs. It encrypts data as it travels between a visitor's browser and your website, so passwords, card details, and form entries can't be read along the way. And it proves the site belongs to the domain in the address bar. Browsers flag sites without one as "Not secure", which puts visitors off before they've read a word.

Validation levels explained

Certificates differ in how much the certificate authority checks before issuing them.

  • Domain Validation (DV): confirms you control the domain. Issued quickly, usually within two days. Right for blogs, portfolios, and most business sites.
  • Organization Validation (OV): also confirms your organization exists. We don't currently offer OV certificates. If you need more than DV, EV gives you the fullest organization check.
  • Extended Validation (EV): the most thorough check of your organization's legal registration and details. Takes longer, usually up to seven days. Your verified company name appears in the certificate details. Right for banks, payment pages, and sites where proving identity matters most.
  • Wildcard: a DV certificate that covers your domain and all its first-level subdomains, such as shop., mail., and login., with one certificate.

Certificates are sold by the year. Choose the right type up front: certificates can't be upgraded or downgraded to another type after purchase. Free reissues let you install the same certificate on as many servers as you need, or reissue it if you move hosts.

Free SSL vs paid SSL

Free SSL is enough when

you run a blog, portfolio, brochure site, or small store on our hosting. It encrypts traffic just as strongly, and visitors see the same padlock.

A paid certificate makes sense when:

- **Your site isn't hosted with us,** or runs on a server where free certificates aren't available. - **You want your organization verified.** An EV certificate confirms your company's identity, not just the domain. - **You need a warranty.** Paid certificates come with warranty cover from the certificate authority. - **You want a site seal** to display on checkout and login pages. - **You need one certificate across many subdomains or servers,** with a wildcard certificate and free reissues. The encryption itself is the same strength. What you pay for is validation, warranty, coverage, and support.

Getting it installed

After you order, you complete validation: for DV that usually means adding a DNS record or replying to an email at the domain. Once issued, install the certificate on your server. Our knowledge base walks through installation for common control panels and servers, and you can open a ticket if you get stuck.

What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate issued by a certificate authority that lets your website use HTTPS. It encrypts data between visitors and your site and confirms that the site belongs to your domain.

What's the difference between DV, OV, and EV certificates?

They differ in what gets checked. DV confirms you control the domain. OV also confirms your organization exists. EV runs the most thorough check of your organization's legal details. All three encrypt traffic to the same standard. We currently offer DV, wildcard DV, and EV certificates.

Do I need a wildcard certificate?

If you run several subdomains, such as shop.yoursite.com and app.yoursite.com, a wildcard covers all of them with one certificate, which is simpler and usually cheaper than buying one for each.

How long does it take to get a certificate?

DV and wildcard certificates are usually issued within two days, once validation is complete. EV certificates take longer, usually up to seven days, because the certificate authority checks your organization's details.

Can I upgrade my certificate later?

No. Certificates can't be changed to another type after purchase, so choose the type you need when you order.
