Domains / Transfer

Transfer your domain to ResellerBytes

The domain transfer process takes four steps: unlock, get the EPP code, start, approve. Your website and email keep working while it happens, and your renewals end up in one account.

Why move your domain here

Domains scattered across different registrars mean separate logins, separate renewal dates, and the risk that one lapses because the reminder went to an old inbox.

Moving them to ResellerBytes puts every domain next to your hosting and email, with renewals on one invoice. A transfer changes who manages the domain's registration. It doesn't change the domain itself. If your domain points at nameservers run by your web host, it keeps pointing there after the move.

Before you start

Check these at your current registrar to avoid a failed transfer.

At least 60 days old

The domain must be at least 60 days old and not transferred in the last 60 days. Registries block transfers inside that window.

Not expired

If the domain is close to its expiry date, renew it at your current registrar first.

Contact email current

Approval requests go to the registrant email on file. Make sure it still reaches you.

DNS records saved

If your old registrar hosts your DNS, copy every record so you can recreate them. Turn WHOIS privacy off if required for the approval email.

How to transfer a domain in four steps

Unlock, get the code, start with us, then approve. Most generic transfers finish within about a week.

1. Unlock the domain

Log in to your current registrar and turn off the registrar lock (sometimes called transfer lock).

2. Get the EPP code

Request the authorization code, also called an EPP code, auth code, or transfer key. It works like a password for the transfer.

3. Start the transfer

Enter your domain on our transfer page, paste in the authorization code, and complete the order.

4. Approve the transfer

Watch for an email asking you to confirm. Approve it, and the transfer goes through. Approving early from your old registrar speeds things up.

Domain transfer cost

Transfer prices for each extension come from our billing system and are listed on the domain pricing page.

  • A transfer adds one year to your registration, so you don't lose the time you've already paid for.
  • That extra year doesn't apply to certain extensions or to domains renewed shortly before the transfer.
  • A .com transfer costs …. Other extensions are on domain pricing.

Country-code domains

Country extensions follow their own registry's rules, and some don't use authorization codes at all.

Contact us before you start and we'll explain the steps for your extension.

Will my website or email go down during the transfer?

Not if your DNS is handled correctly. The transfer changes which company manages the registration, while your nameservers keep pointing to the same hosting and email. If your old registrar hosts your DNS, save your records before you start, since some registrars remove them after the domain leaves. Downtime usually happens only when someone changes nameservers at the same time, so leave DNS alone until the transfer completes.

How long does a domain transfer take?

For generic extensions such as .com, most transfers finish within about a week. The current registrar has up to five days to release the domain, and that approval window is most of the wait. You can often shorten it by approving the transfer from your old registrar's dashboard once you've started it with us. Country extensions follow their own registry's timing.

Where do I find my auth code?

Your current registrar provides it, usually in the domain's settings page under a name like "Authorization code", "EPP code", or "Transfer key". Some registrars email it instead of displaying it. If you can't find it, their support team can send it. The code is case-sensitive, so copy and paste it rather than typing it.

Why did my transfer fail?

The usual causes are a domain that's still locked, an incorrect or expired auth code, a domain registered or transferred within the last 60 days, or an approval email that went unanswered. Check each at your current registrar, then open a ticket and we'll look at the error with you.

Do I need to move my hosting too?

No. You can transfer just the domain and leave your website hosted where it is. Many customers move the domain first and the hosting later, or the other way around. If you do want to move your site, our website migration page explains how.
