Getting started with ResellerBytes

Five steps take you from a new account to a live, secure website with email on your own domain. Work through them in order.

ResellerBytes support guides

1. Log in to the client area

After you order, we email your client area login and the details for your hosting account. Keep them somewhere safe.

The client area at portal.resellerbytes.com is where you manage services, domains, invoices and support tickets. From your hosting service there, you can open your hosting control panel, where you manage your website files, email and databases.

2. Connect your domain

Your site needs the domain pointed at hosting before visitors can reach it.

Your website needs a domain pointed at your hosting before visitors can reach it.

If you registered the domain with ResellerBytes: new domains use our nameservers unless you entered your own at checkout. You can check under Domains in the client area. Domain management explains the settings.

If your domain is registered elsewhere: log in to your registrar and change the nameservers to the ones in your welcome email.

If you want to keep DNS with another provider: leave the nameservers alone and point an A record at your hosting account's IP address instead. If you can't find the IP, ask in a ticket.

DNS changes can take a few hours to reach everyone, and up to 24 to 48 hours in some cases. Your site may load for some people before others during that window. Our guide on how to point a domain to your hosting walks through both methods.

Moving an existing site from another host? Follow the website migration steps instead. Ask us about moving after you order SSD hosting.

3. Install WordPress (or upload your site)

To start a WordPress site, install it from your hosting control panel, or download WordPress and upload it yourself. Choose your domain, set an admin username and a strong password, and finish the setup. You can then log in at yourdomain.com/wp-admin. The knowledge base has an article on optimizing WordPress.

If you have a site built another way, upload the files to your account's public web folder using the control panel's file manager or an FTP client.

4. Set up email on your domain

In the control panel, create a mailbox such as you@yourdomain.com. Starter includes 5 email accounts, Business 20, and Pro unlimited under fair usage. You can then:

  • Read mail in your browser through webmail
  • Add the account to Outlook, Apple Mail, Gmail or your phone, using the incoming and outgoing server settings shown in the control panel

If mail isn't arriving after you've connected your domain, check that your domain's MX records point to the right place. To send mail from a form on your website, see the knowledge base article on SMTP server settings. Need email without a website? See business email.

5. Check that SSL (HTTPS) is active

SSL encrypts traffic between your site and its visitors and removes the "Not secure" warning in browsers. Every SSD hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate. If your site still shows "Not secure" a day after your domain points to us, open a ticket.

Once the certificate is active, set your site to always load over https://. In WordPress, update the site address under Settings, then General.

After that

  • SSD hosting plans include timeline backups. Download your own copy now and then too, especially before big changes.
  • Review your renewal dates under Billing in the client area. Billing Support explains how renewals work.

Getting Started questions

What should I do after buying hosting?

Log in to the client area, point your domain to your hosting, install your website or WordPress, create your email accounts and check that SSL is active. The five steps above cover each one.

How do I connect my domain to my hosting?

Set your domain's nameservers to the ones in your welcome email. It can take up to 24 to 48 hours for the change to reach everyone.

I didn't get my welcome email. What should I do?

Check your spam folder for mail from ResellerBytes. If it's not there, open a ticket and we'll resend your details.

My domain still shows the old site or an error. Is something wrong?

Probably not, if you changed nameservers recently. Allow time for DNS to update and clear your browser cache. If it's been more than 48 hours, open a ticket with your domain name.

Who can help me if I get stuck?

Open a support ticket. If you already have a site elsewhere, ask us about website migration after you order SSD hosting.

Stuck on one of these steps?

Open a ticket, tell us which step you're on and what you see, and we'll help you finish it.
